Real Stories From Our MSNZ Community - Ben And Tracey’s Story
The schooling years represent a pivotal chapter in a young person’s life, a period dedicated to discovering their strengths and shaping their identity. Ideally, the classroom should be a supportive stage where children learn to navigate social their way through complexities and academic challenges their way.
But for many students, the traditional school setting can feel more like an obstacle than a foundation. When the rhythm of the classroom doesn’t align with how a child’s brain works, the resulting disconnect often leads to more than just academic struggle; it can impact their very sense of self, manifesting as deep frustration and a loss of confidence that echoes far beyond the school gates.
Ben And Tracey’s Story
For parents Ben and Tracey, watching their son Jack struggle in a mainstream environment was heartbreaking. Over four years, Jack had gradually fallen behind his peers due to the restrictions of a system that wasn’t built for his needs. His primary challenge was literacy, but the impact went far beyond reading and writing.
“The literacy challenges created huge pent-up pressure and frustration,” Tracey shared. “It poured out at home. He became introverted and started spiralling into a lonely place.” Jack himself remembers that time clearly: “It was hard and frustrating. It made me feel mad and angry.”
Despite Ben and Tracey’s efforts to address these concerns with his previous school, no solutions were forthcoming. Jack began to resist the morning drop-off, and “hating life in general” became a daily reality fuelled by a constant barrage of confusion in the classroom.
The Mastery Schools NZ Difference
In 2024, the family jumped at the opportunity to enrol Jack at MSNZ – Arapaki. They wanted a school where Jack would be “the important one,” a place where he would finally get the specialised support he needed.
The transformation was dramatic. For Jack, the shift to a smaller environment made an immediate difference. “There are a lot less kids at this school, which makes me feel a lot better,” Jack said. “I enjoy learning now, compared to hating it last year. I’m able to spell words I couldn’t before, and I’m much better at maths.”
The emotional and social changes have been just as significant. Ben and Tracey have watched Jack transition from an “emotional wreck” to a boy who is happy, content, and confident. He has even started engaging with others unprompted, offering greetings and saying “thank you” in shops and restaurants, a trait his family and friends have noticed with joy.
“Jack’s confidence has definitely grown,” Ben noted. “He’s speaking up with answers and suggestions. Academically, the skill was obviously always there; it just needed the attention and nurturing to shine. He loves telling me about a new maths formula or a ‘big’ word on the way home.”
Jack’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed; he was recently awarded the “2025 Citizen of the Year Award” and featured in the school newsletter, a moment of immense pride for him. Perhaps most tellingly, the physical stress has vanished: “I sleep better now,” Jack added.
For Ben and Tracey, the move to MSNZ – Arapaki has provided the ultimate relief. The morning drop-offs are easy, the resistance is gone, and learning finally makes sense to their son.
