Real Stories From Our MSNZ Community – Sara And Mathew’s Story
Kids attend school during a critical window of their development, a time when they are building the foundations for social interaction, academic growth, and self-regulation. For many children, school is where they first begin to measure their own worth. They look to their peers and teachers to understand who they are and what they are capable of.
However, when a child’s brain processes information differently, this environment can quickly become a source of profound distress. If a child feels consistently misunderstood or left behind by the pace of the classroom, their sense of security can crumble, leading to anxiety, disengagement, and a deep-seated fear of learning.
For many parents and educators, navigating the world of learning difficulties and neurodiversity can be complex. Today, medical professionals more readily recognise that conditions like ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia require more customised environments to thrive. Whether a child is struggling with focus, hyperactivity, or specific learning needs like reading and writing, the standard “one size fits all” classroom often just isn’t enough.

Sara And Mathew’s Story
Sara and Matthew experienced this same kind of struggle with their son, Cole. Despite his clear intelligence, Cole was not reading or writing at his age level and showed little improvement during his first few years of school. He found the environment increasingly hard and stressful.
“The main challenge for Cole was he could not keep up with the work, and the class kept moving forward without him. We were doing everything to help him at home, extra reading, tutoring etc and he was trying so hard to do everything he was told at school, but the way they were teaching him was not working.” Sara said. “The environment was very loud, and he came home often and said I can’t concentrate as there is too much noise.”
For Sara and Mathew, the emotional toll was quite visible. Cole began to feel defeated and down about his academic ability. Even with extra tutoring and support at home, the way he was being taught in a mainstream setting simply wasn’t working. Sara knew Cole was capable, but the system was masking his potential. “Cole is one of the smartest people I know,” she said. “It was heartbreaking to see him feeling so defeated.”

The Mastery Schools NZ Difference
In 2024, Sara and Matthew decided to move Cole to MSNZ – Arapaki. It was a decision driven by the hope that a different approach would finally unlock Cole’s abilities. The change was almost immediate.
“One week after I started, I felt like everything was feeling better and I felt good about that.” Cole recalled. “Everything is quieter and easy for me now. My teachers are great, and I feel great and I’m doing better and better.”
The transformation for Cole has been academic as well as emotional. At MSNZ – Arapaki, the Mastery team understands the depth of neurodiverse children’s needs. The pace of learning and the use of repetition have helped Cole cement his knowledge in ways he couldn’t before. He is now making significant strides in math, reading, and writing.
“Cole has more confidence in his work and academic ability now, he was starting to feel defeated and down at his old school. He seems happier and lighter.” Sara noted. “He is starting to read at home, just small words, but he is trying. It is such a relief for him to be shown better ways of learning so he can finally show how smart and capable he really is.”
